While in DC for a conference, I decided to skip a fancy schmancy dinner to go to the greatest sandwich joint in America: Potbelly's. As I sat down to enjoy my wreck, I noticed Michael Steele, candidate for Republican National Committee chair, and the man who gave the best speech at the 2008 Pennsylvania Leadership Conference sitting nearby.
Shortly after I sat down to eat, a young girl came in, selling alarmingly large candy bars to raise money for a school field trip for $7 per bar. She first approached Mr. Steele and his colleague and gave her pitch. Instead of yelling "Scram kid" like Oscar the Grouch or I normally would have, Steele engaged her in and then offered simply to donate without buying the candy. Recognizing the deftness of this maneuver, and given my lack of desire for 20 pounds of caramel chocolate and wish to avoid parting with a small fortune, I too offered to simply contribute to the cause, and gave a couple a dollar bills.
I thus concluded that Steele would make a good RNC chair - if he can convince me to give up some of my own money, then perhaps he can persuade me (and a few others) that the GOP isn't just a den of hacks.

Michael is one of my top picks.
The beautiful thing about real conservatism, is that it doesn't exclude good works, it merely seeks the best alternatives. Those that do not rely on government mandates.
Conservative folks are some of the most generous out there, yet we must be allowed to make the decisions where our earnings will do the best works.
